Drug Prevention

As mentioned elsewhere, our ultimate purpose is to help youth reach their goals, succeed in life and help others do they same.  However, drugs are so prevalent that getting involved is not difficult, rather, it is “normal” in some circles.  This is why this has to be the first point of address in a life skills program.  Not only so that they can make a decision regarding drugs early in life because they understand the implications but also so they can help their friends make that choice too.  This is a vital component of the program.

To get their attention, the program needs to be interesting, so interesting in fact that they want listen and to pass on what they’ve heard to others.  How we do this is topresent information that most other programs don’t so that when we come to a school, it is not “just another drug program”.

Secondly, the program needs to be enjoyable.  Although it is a serious subject and lives are ruined by drugs it still needs to be fun.  The youth do not need another person to come and preach at them and tell them what to do, we present it in a such a way that they make their own decision.

Thirdly, in an audience there will be a percentage of drug users, then those who have begun experimenting, those who might be interested in the future and thenthose who have already made up their minds and are not interested.  We cannot speak to them all as if they are users and we’re trying to discourage them as then we loose all those who aren’t interested, we have to speak to them all.  We approach it from an angle that is acceptable and relevant to everyone.  In this way the users don’t feel singled out and will listen as it is not directed at them, the non users will listen as they see what it has done to the presenter and does to others and want to help encourage them to remain drug-free.  We speak about how drugs affect ones ability to really enjoy life.  It is all done as interactively as possible so they’re continuously involved.

We often survey the group before and after the program to see how well we have achieved the outcomes we intend.  We also use this information to continuously adjust the program so as to get the best results.  In addition we use these surveys to get a sense of where the students are at and what the current trends are.  In an ever changing world, one must remain relevant and this is how we do that.
